  • Most common cancer in women, second most common cause of cancer death in women in USA

  • New cases of breast cancer diagnosed in USA in 2009:

· 192,370 women

· 1,910 men

  • Deaths from breast cancer in USA in 2009

· 40,170 women

· 440 men

· Death rates have been decreasing since 1990, most likely due to treatment advances, earlier detection through screening, increased awareness

  • The incidence of breast cancer in women the USA is 1 in 8 (approximately 13%)  This means that 13 out of every 100 women can expect to develop breast cancer over the course of a lifetime.

  • Caucasian women are slightly more likely to develop breast cancer when compared to African American women. This may be secondary to African American women developing more aggressive tumors.  Asian, Hispanic and Native American women have a lower risk.
